The Nine Streets → Herengracht → Reguliersgracht triangle in reverse — the canal belt where the crowds don't reach.
The canal belt is loud in a few places and quiet everywhere else. Walked away from the direct-line tourist axes, the water is glass, the elms hold the shade, and the seven-bridge view at Reguliersgracht at dusk is one of the softest sights in Europe.
Start at Herengracht near Leidsestraat and walk south along the water. Cross to Prinsengracht via one of the small side streets, drift east through Reguliersgracht (the seven bridges corner), and return via Keizersgracht. Choose the shaded side and let the reflections do the work.

Total gain 6 m over 3.56 km · paved surface.
Level paved sidewalks along the canals. Some cobble sections and canal-bridge cambers can be uneven; standard wheelchairs manage the main quays but plan crossings at road bridges (not narrow footbridges). Accessible toilets at NEMO/Amstel and canal-belt cafés.
A seven-axis reading of what this walk gives the walker: Quiet, Nature, Flow, Water, Heritage, Recovery, Ascent.
"The canal belt away from the axes — elm shade, glass water, and quiet reflection."
Sound stays soft — you'll hear leaves, water and your own breath more than traffic.
Meaningful green pockets threaded between built stretches.
One continuous line — few crossings, easy to find and keep your rhythm.
Water beside you most of the way — a river, canal, lake or sea keeping company.
Old stones and long memory hold the route — architecture, gardens, sacred edges.
Deeply restorative — low effort, soft surface, safe to walk slowly.
Effectively level — no climb to prepare for.
Let the water hold whatever is heavy.
Restorative · a pace the vagus nerve can rest in
Breathe in for 4 steps, out for 5. Keep the exhale a little longer than the inhale — that is the whole practice.
Slow down until the count softens. Sit on the next bench for a full minute. Presence is the goal — the map will wait.
