Ferry Building to Pier 39 (quieter early hours) or reverse to Rincon Park — the bay-front promenade with wide sky and low water.
The Embarcadero at the right hour is one of the great flat urban walks. The bay is a full horizon, the promenade is wide and step-free, ferries come and go on a slow rhythm. Walk it before 10am or after 5pm and you have it almost to yourself.
Start at the Ferry Building at opening and walk north. Sit at Pier 15 or Pier 23 for a breath. If the crowds are heavy at Pier 39, turn back south instead toward Rincon Park and the Bay Bridge — the promenade there is emptier and the light is bigger.
