Why this route restores

Utrecht keeps its quiet below street level and behind gates. Walking the wharves puts a wall of old brick between you and the city's noise, and the courtyards give you the rarest thing a historic centre can offer: an enclosed, planted, unhurried place to stand still.

Presence notes

Begin on Domplein with the tower above you and walk down to the wharf, one level below the traffic. The water is close enough to hear. Follow the Oudegracht north to the Zandbrug, cross into Wijk C, and return along Wittevrouwensingel and Lepelenburg, where the city softens into trees. Turn into Bruntenhof and Pandhof Sinte Marie — two courtyards that ask for a lower voice.
